Where to start... RIGHT?

Well how about I start here! My closet is always organized! Let me say that again... my closet is always ALWAYS organized. It would be great if this mantra translated into other areas of my life, (like my car which is always a mess!) but that is neither here nor there. With that being said, I want to share with you a method I've been using for YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It may take some time before keeping your closet tidy becomes second nature, (this was definitely the case for me) but if you keep at it, it will definitely streamline your daily routine. Trust me, it's a Godsend.

MY PHILOSOPHY: I refuse to organize junk. It's a waste of time. Get rid of it. If you have tons of clothes like me, any extra real estate for incoming clothing is essential! So the more junk you get rid of, the more welcoming your closet will be for new items. Definitely start organizing your closet by first getting rid of unwanted items.

I organize my closet by type and color. I keep it very simple. One thing I've learned is that for a system to be sustainable and quickly adaptable, it needs to be simple. All pants go together, all shirts go together, all dresses go together and so forth. Once you've done that initial grouping, you can then organize by color. I decided to tap into a pre-existing color scheme that we all learned in our youth... or so I think we all learned in our youth LOL. ROYGBP (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple), ROYGBIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet) or some variation thereof. That's right folks, I use the rainbow. If it's purple stick it with the purples, if it's blue stick it with the blues etc. I used to order the clothing from the lightest to darkest within that color family, but it's definitely not necessary. If you want, you can put patterns in the front and solids in the back, BUT the whole point is to keep the system simple so that it can be sustainable and convenient. It can become a bit of an inconvenience when it takes you triple the amount of time to put your clothes away because of detailed minutiae. You can add to the system, but be cautious. My exact order is below:

(pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, tan/beige, cream, white, grey, black)

Because of this simple system, I know exactly where everything is supposed to be. If it's not there, it's dirty. If it's not dirty, it's lost. I come to those two conclusions rather quickly, and fortunately don't have to spend a ton of time locating items. I never have to go through my entire closet to find an item.

Bonus perk... Plus, If you have roommates, you will immediately know when something is out of place or has been moved in your closet. Mhmmmmm.... My roommate days are long gone, but I always knew when someone had been in my closet.

Hope this helps you along your journey to garment liberty!

XOXO - The Rollin Rack
